Fallout 3 is a great template for what a modern RPG should be like. Funny, dark and chilling, it really picks up on the legacy of previous games in the series. However, one thing that must be said is that you shouldn’t buy this game if you hated The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, as the two are very similar in their structure.

The actual gameplay of Fallout is very similar to TES: Oblivion in terms of first person perspective. One major difference is obvious though. Guns, and lots of em. You can choose to play the game as a straight up first person shooter (which would be hard), or use the fuckin’ awesome “V.A.T.S” targeting system. This system allows you to pause time and target each individual part of the body, before unpausing the game and seeing the results. Even if this does simplify the combat somewhat, I loved it. Its conception could truly be one of the best things to happen to RPG combat systems ever.

One thing negative thing that can be said about Fallout 3 is the ending. Whilst I know there are multiple endings (I’m sure I will get around 30 emails reminding me of this), the one I saw seemed to be nothing but an evaluation of what I had done, rather than an actual ending to the story. Imagine my surprise then, when
However, this disappointment aside, Fallout 3 dishes out some really fun gameplay, backed up by a typically brilliant

Don't tell me. You've been sitting at that computer all day, feverishly checking your email inbox every few minutes, whilst rocking forwards and backwards muttering under your breath. It's understandable, in the current Home climate. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're gonna have to wait a bit longer.TedTheDog, SCEE Home Community Manager, has given us another quick update about what's happening on the Home front (eh, see what I did there?) via the Official EU PlayStation Forums.
Ted informs us that SCEE are busy at work identifying those unfortunate PlayStationers who did not recieve the beta key which should have been sent to them, and are adding them to the list of people due to be sent a key in the next batch later this week. No emails will be sent today, Ted mentions, so you may as well shut down Hotmail now. If the email problem is fixed by tomorrow morning, beta emails might be sent out tomorrow, but if not all the emails will go out on Thursday.
To sign off, I can only say on Sony's and TedTheDog's behalf, sorry for the delay.

Many PS3 gamers waiting in anticipation for their closed beta key wil be disappointed, as they have been delayed again, according to Home Community Manager on the EU PlayStation Forums, TedTheDog.External problems due to issues with SCEE's email systems have caused the beta keys, which were due to be sent last Friday, being prevented from being distributed.
Just over 20,000 Beta key emails managed to make their way through the email chaos to reach their lucky recipients, many of who have downloaded the Home Beta and are enjoying it at the current time.
TedTheDog ensures the PlayStation community that SCEE intend to resend all the beta emails they think didn't get through as soon as they can, and also attempt to send a larger batch on Thursday (27th November). However, the email problem needs to be dealt with first. Ted also tells us that SCEE are working on the email blockage, but it's a pretty slow process, so it is safe to say that no emails will leave Home HQ today.
For those interested, the first batch of beta emails were targetted at a certain percentage of people who downloaded something from the PlayStation Store, and has nothing to do with the number of posts on the EU PlayStation Forums, as some thought. The next batch will be making their way to active PSN users who have logged into an SCEE hosted game in the last couple of months. Although some will not get a beta key, those who don't can be assured that the Open Beta will hit the Store before Christmas.

PS. The firewall which was put on Home to prevent gamesharing has been removed, thus making Home act like many other PSN games in the fact that it can be shared. However, TedTheDog and SCE encourage users to keep their PSN ID, password and other confidential information private and to avoid gamesharing at all costs. Please be sensible and keep your PSN login information private.

The sequel to arguably 360’s most treasured game to date, Gears of War 2, was probably the most eagerly anticipated game of the year and last week Marcus and co. returned to kick Locus arse once again.Gears 2 is a constant battle for survival for the humans of Sera. The Locust have been sinking cities through a new, unknown means and now Jacinto is their last beacon of hope. In a final, desperate attempt to destroy the Locust, an attack at the Locust’s home turf is made. Marcus and the rest of Delta squad return to the Locust tunnels to take the fight to them. As humanities final stand, Gears of War 2 involves larger battles with more gears being sent into the action.
On first impressions of Gears 2, there isn’t much evidence of change from the sequel. Take cover-kill-move is still the most effective tactic, the graphics are still beautiful and the many ways of massacring the locust still never get old. Epic boasted of the many improvements and modifications it has made on Gears 1; apart from changing the roadie-run so you don’t jump to cover when simply trying to get from A to B and a stronger cover system, there isn’t much evidence of this. Not that it’s a problem, there wasn’t much in Gears of War 1 that needed improvement and if Epic had messed with the sequel too much it would have lost the magic of the first game. The two main aims of Epic when they began Gears 2 were better plot and longer game play. By bringing comic book writer, Joshua Ortega on board they hoped to make the game more emotional with a deeper plot. Don’t expect Gears 2 to have you blubbing like a baby, it won’t. But who would buy this game for its emotional content anyway? The length of the campaign has been improved though. I managed to play through it on the normal difficulty in 3 days but that was pretty much constant play when I wasn’t sleeping or at college. Average campaign length is about 10-12 hours but I’m sure plenty of people will be able to tear through it at a quicker rate.
As well as the main plot of ‘kick the crap outta the locust’, sub-plots have also been added, the search for Dom’s wife, Maria being one of them. Many of these plots aren’t finished by the end of the game. The finale of the game is also rather disappointing. The sudden ending is anti-climatic, rushed and as annoying as the ending to Halo 2 but clearly gives the opportunity for a Gears of War 3.Despite its few flaws, Gears of War 2 is an exceptional game, far surpassing the prequel and can be expected to be under many gamers Christmas trees this December - that is if you can wait that long to play it.

Those pesky Chimera. They just don't give up. Not only have they taken over Europe, suffered heavy losses in Great Britain and continued the fight by going over to the US, but now they're flexing their muscles and killing innocent Sackboys. When will they stop? That's right, my lords, ladies and Sackpeople. More DLC is coming to LittleBigPlanet, one item being a Chimeran Grim costume for your Sackboy to celebrate the release of Resistance 2. The cosume, which you can see in the image above, will be available on the Japanese PSN at a cost of ¥200 which should come in at about £1.50 if the content makes it over here.
Other costumes making their way to the Land of the Rising Sun include a TV head for Sackboy, a MotorStorm riders outfit and a Thanksgiving turkey head (for some reason). Hopefully all these costumes should make it over to the UK. Keep an eye on the PlayStation Store to see.

Super Smash Bros Brawl is possibly the most anticipated game for the Wii this year, though the majority have abandoned ship after Nintys switch to the casual market, could this be the game to bring them back? Well Nintendo always make an amazing piece of work out of their flagship titles and this is no exception.
Brawl is a fighting game with a difference. As fans will know the premises of the game is a beat em up featuring all of the signature Nintendo characters, such as Mario and Link, ETC, and then some. A lot of the characters are starting to creep in from Third party companies such as Konami’s Solid Snake and SEGA’s Blue Hedgehog, Sonic. Don’t worry though if you don’t recognise some of the characters such as Marth and Ike from Fire Emblem (Final Fantasy mixed with Advance Wars) and Ness and Lucas from Earthbound, these games were never released outside of Japan, with the exception of the more recent Fire Emblem titles. All together the roster caps off at an amazing 35 characters with only a couple of copies with altered stats, this gives Brawl amazing versatility and increases its life span with all the different options and paths available to the player, to makes things better, the game is quite clearly made up with a tournament fighter in mind.
The game is perfectly balanced and as a player you can explore so many different styles of fighting its mind boggling. The game play itself in multiplayer (Where the game is focused around) is simple and effective. The players are thrown into an area based on one of many Nintendo game based arenas, each with its own unique gimmick, and made to try and knock each other out of the arena off stage. The game has no health bars, only a damage percentage that raises as a player takes damage, the higher the percentage the further the player flies out of the ring when hit by an attack, making it harder for them to recover back onto the stage. It’s a simple premise but items (also from various different Nintendo games) are thrown into the mix and add humour and unpredictability to the game. Especially the game changing Smash ball (Allows each character use of their unique uber powerful “Final Smash”) and the Assist Trophy (Summons a NPC onto the playing field, again from a different Ninty game). The game arenas do the same and to top it all off, the sheer variety and humour of the game keeps it from getting boring. Whilst it can be played against bots, the multiplayer content is really built for having friends over where the fun really comes into this game and brings it alive, the more the merrier and it makes the game fun and exciting. Though if your sad and have no freinds or still fancy a quiet night in the game is online compatable, though seriously lag ridden, making some games unplayable. I'd also like to add that this is the only game I have problems with. My internet supports Live with no lag, this is the sole game Im having problems with.
As a Wii game the graphics are limited in comparison to the 360 and PS3 but regardless the graphics are amazing and are comparable to another next gen console when shown in standard definition, its when the consoles make the jump to HD that this game starts to look shabby in comparisons to other consoles. However for a Wii game the visuals are fantastic and the frame rate holds up well even with a ton going on in the playing field. The music is also suitably stellar with over 300 different tracks in the game, ranging from epic orchestral music to a fast paced techno track. Each one suitably fits the situation it plays in and if you don’t like it, change it for a different piece, each section has around 4 or more different tracks to choose from, I really cant stress the amount of choice you have in this game, this games limit is your imagination. In a first for the Smash series Brawl has a two player story mode. On its own its quite weak and stands up a game in its own right, not a brilliant game but a decent one. The story is compelling, even with only one line of dialogue in the entire story, the sound is still stellar and the game play really holds well (with the same beat em up style applied to a 3-d side scroller), the ability to co op as well just adds to the fun of the game. It’s a little easy and on its own would make an average game, but when stuck with the immense multiplayer Brawl possesses, it gives the game another leg to stand on.
Other game play modes players have to choose from include, the minigame based “Stadium” with such hits has “Home Run Contest” (damage the target enough and then hit with a baseball bat) and “Boss Battles” (essentially Brawls Boss Rush mode). Event mode where the player must complete various challenges with certain characters. Classic where the player must battle a series of opponents and bosses with various twists. And All Star mode where the player fights every single character in the game with limited health and no items. To boot I haven’t even covered every single game mode, seriously how much more can a gamer want in a game.
This game is quite simply amazing. It takes everything good about its sequel and adds so much more to the formula. It is quite simply a fans dream with a horde of Easter eggs and references to the many Nintendo games. Its only real drawback is that there is no benefit to using the Wiis motion controls in game, as they prove to be more of a hinderance than a cool add on to the game. This isnt a major flaw just a slight dissapointment. The game play is solid, graphics are good the sound is stellar, this is the must have game for the Wii this year.

TedTheDog, everyone's favourite Home Community Manager, has updated the awaiting millions on the progress of Home as the open beta comes closer. Here's what Ted posted on the forums. So, hopefully an Open Beta release is going to grace our PS3's before Christmas. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.Heres a rough overview of the coming weeks:
- The version 1.0 Patch Notes will be published in the closed beta forum so they know what to expect and to help plan testing.
- A couple of days later Version 1.0 will be released into the Closed beta. That will not happen this week.
- SCEE will be inviting a large number of extra testers into the closed beta to load test and that process will start within a day or so of v1.0 going live. We wont invite them all straight away, we'll ramp it up over a a period of time. We will be inviting non-English speaking testers for the first time. Languages covered will be English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Please remember these are languages, not countries, so more than the immediately obvious countries will be included to a degree. The lists have been chosen already, dont try changing your language to get included!
- Once we start inviting people in to the Closed Beta the public SCEE Home forums will become the Home beta test forums.
- The date of Open Beta start will be announced in advance.
- Open Beta starts and that will be just as it implies, Open to all.

Most people who are playing the game are only in the range of level 71 and 75 but to see people already level 80 and already clearing endgame raids is quite an astonishment.
Grimmy
It's always the same. You wait for the game of the biggest film franchise you've ever seen, and then two come along at once on a single Blu-Ray. Just like with buses. Not that I'm complaining, of course. It's a Bond game, after all.Quantum of Solace is based around the last two Bond movies, Casino Royale and the film of the same name, Quantum of Solace. Bond's quest to uncover Le Chiffre and his quest to hunt down the man who was responsible for the death of someone close to him make the plotline jam packed and fast-paced.
The storyline is, overall, good - but some niggling weaknesses stop Quantum from being what it should be. The game's focus is mainly on the storyline of Casino Royale; Quantum's story is rushed and leaves the player wondering why the things that happened did happen. However, the scenes taken from both stories are well ported into the game, with extra bits added into the scenes to beef it up a bit.The gameplay is the game's real strong point. Based on the Call of Duty 4 game engine, Activision have worked hard to make sure gameplay is smooth. The cover system is excellent, and the controls are simple enough to master. Switching between the first-person and third-person view is quick and fluid, and clever little additions like being able to turn round corners whist remaining in cover mode make Quantum's gameplay something special.
Graphics are average. When running in 1080i, there's noticeable jagged edges and textures could do with some work. The quality of the graphics varies throughout the game, although they're noticably better in cover than they are in the first-person view. The P99 is also the only gun with an animation for screwing on a silencer, so not much work has gone in there. There are some really clever features, though. The ability to play the major fistfights from both movies is a big thumbs-up - the Siena fight at the beginning of Quantum is playable, as well as the freight train fight and the Bond/guy-with-samurai-sword-who-tries-to-cut-Bond-in-half action sequence. All these set pieces are played using a series of in-time button presses, which ultimately decide Bond's fate.
Quantum's online features are poor. The game modes are unoriginal and the network features are plagued with the same tumours Call of Duty 4 suffered, for example host ended game, downloading game settings and poor connection due to a lack of dedicated servers. The gameplay online can also be glitchy and the speed of your broadband will make a huge difference on your score, as the game's speed tends to bias toward those with a better connection. So, is Mr. Bond's latest outing going into the bargain basket or the record books. The honest answer is neither. It'll stay on the shelves, for the plain reason that it isn't amazing and it isn't terrible - Quantum is an okay effort at a Bond game. If you've got fifty quid lying about and like Bond, buy it - but if you aren't particularly keen on Bond, steer clear.

Due to extreme circumstance (five triple-A games coming out within a couple of weeks), I have decided to do two short, bullet pointed reviews.
Far Cry 2
- Great environment
- Shooting is quite good
- Too easy to be detected
- Guards’ AI is too good
- Far too much driving
- Accomplished map editor
- Missions are repetitive
- Multiplayer quite good, seems to copy CoD4 a little too much
- Fire effects are brilliant
- Graphics have improved
- Multiplayer much less laggy
- New Champion’s League mode impressed me
- Become a legend mode is good, but needs more features
- Still needs a proper custom Master League mode
- Lack of licensing needs to be addressed
- Needs more internet integration, e.g. team rosters to be updated after every transfer window
- Referees are too eager to dish out cards

Microsoft’s infamous Red Ring of Death has claimed countless Xbox 360 consoles, both myself and Grimmy can vouch for this with first hand experience. Now though, it seems the issue may be a thing of the past. Reliable internet sources state that a new motherboard –“Jasper”- and a new graphics chip will greatly decrease the chance of more recent models falling prey to the bane of many 360 consoles which has cost Microsoft over a billion dollars.Another rumour that has been spread across forums throughout the cyber world is the introduction of a 360 Slim model to accompany these much needed internal updates. Microsoft has dismissed these rumours, claiming that with their already large variety of models, a new one wasn’t necessary. With the new motherboard and graphics chip however, perhaps decreasing the size of the 360 which, in comparison to the PS3 and Wii, is quite bulky and cumbersome.

LGF '08 continues on it's massive journey through London, getting more successful as it goes on. As ever, I'm reporting for GGTL with the latest from the festival.31st October - 2nd November hailed the arrival of the Xbox street team as they requisitioned Leicester Square for gaming purposes. New games Lips, You're In The Movies, Scene It? Box Office Smash, 007: Quantum of Solace and the latest in the ever popular Lego series, Lego Batman, were available to play at the event.
1st November saw IGN's Transatlantic Challenge fought out at EA's 'Be The One' event in Trafalgar Square. Both the UK competitor, Chris Bullard, and his American rival, Ryan Glick, fought bravely; Bullard won the first round in the FIFA match, with Bullard soon pulling back with a fantastic performance on Madden. The competition was won by Glick in a fierce game of Tiger Woods '09.
1st November also saw the University of London taken over for the 'Games That Make A Difference' event, a lecture on games which make a difference or contribute to various aspects of society.
2nd November had to mean The Pro Evo Playoff at The Leigon in Old Street. This unofficial, fan-run event pitted competitors wits against each other in Konami's football favourite. The event was also the venue of a live DJ, and so made the night as fun as it was fast-paced.
7th November will play host to 'Who Wants To Be...' at the Unicorn Theatre. The event is a spontaneous, democratic game show where each member of the audience pay a tenner to get in. All the money is then pooled together, and the audience have to raise ideas about how they want to use the money. Previously, an audience of 1000 suggested that they sack the host and put the cash behind the theatre bar, collective ownership of a dog, guerilla gardening and actually burning the cash there and then. This time, double the audience means double the cash, so £2000 for an audience of 2000 to play God with. Sounds interesting.
12th November sees Cybersonica Social: The Sound of Games. Each month investigates a different strand of work associated with Cybersonica with line-ups to suit. The Sound of Games features live music performances as well as showings of short films and audiovisual performances.
You're up to date with everything that's going on at the London Games Festival. I'll keep you updated as the festival continues.

If you look on any online gaming forum you’ll find people whining about how the Nintendo Wii has no “Hardcore” titles and that every good game on the system has an Italian Plumber stamped on the front of it. No More Heroes is quite simply what the Wii needs, en masse. With the graphics of the game, you’ll notice that they bear large similarities to Rising Star games previous title for the GameCube's Killer7. The graphics are anime based and as such make good use of the Wii’s less than stellar graphics capability to great effect. This suits the game perfectly and is one of the key attributes that gives this game its amazing personality. The graphics and frame rate are also consistent within the game as well which is impressive seeing as each dismembered opponent seems to gush horrific amounts of blood when killed. The game also has a nice arcade style soundtrack and effects which really add to the retro atmosphere. Each line uttered by a character is also side splitting, with each moment perfectly timed and executed.
Turning to the story - No More Heroes is a simple yet compelling narrative. It features the events of main character and down and out loser Travis Touchdown, whom after buying a Lightsaber rip-off “Beam Katana” becomes an assassin and eventually finds himself ranked 11th in the United Assassin association ranking board. Travis, after finding this out, decides to shoot for the top with his reward being able to do UAA honey “Sylvia”. The story doesn’t progress too much after the start, though seeing each individual assassin and their brief but effective back story is inspiration enough to see you to the next fight.
Gameplay wise the controls are set like you would expect of a standard Wii game. The A and B buttons handle attacks and a swing of the Wii mote in line with an in game prompt, though don’t be fooled this game will have you swinging the Wii mote as much as Twilight Princess as finishing moves appear alot - this isn’t a bad thing though. The enemies are pretty dumb and will just try to swarm you as there main form of attack, the challenge comes from fighting ever greater waves of opponents coming at you, each one just skin swaps of the same basic enemy. The difficulty is ramped up though by an increase in health and attack power by the enemies so you remain on your toes in combat (though you yourself can buy new Katanas to help even the odds again) - it's still mass slaughter on the part of Travis, though. The last major point about the game play which really makes the game is the ranked boss fights. Each one has a completely unique persona, array of attacks, and an awesome background track, which Im actually listening to as Im writing this. Each battle will make you laugh, sweat and horrified, and is what makes NMH so good.
Sadly one major letdown for the game is the short length, if you stick around to get all the upgrades the game takes around 8 hrs to complete and there’s only a harder difficultly to add to the games replay ability after completion. This is upsetting seeing as one of the best features of the story is seeing the next boss, taking the surprise out of the fight takes the edge of a little.
In conclusion No More Heroes is a must have for any hardcore gamer owning a Wii, the crude humour, the sea of gore and the Pop culture boss fights make this game quite possible one of the best on the console so far, though the game is quite small so try and get it on a rental if possible.9/10
