Gaming Conversation - Part 2

Matthew says:
I hear Gears of War 2 is coming out in 08, I am pretty jealous to be honest, one of the only games I would want off XBOX360
Gr1mzorz says:
I absolutely loved Gears of War, it had an amazing storyline, stunning graphics and a good strong multiplayer mode. I would be amazed to see GoW 2 out this year but I am not sure if it will as it could take longer than they expected it to make. It’s not officially announced for this year as of yet. But hopefully it won't be too long afterwards.

Matthew says:
It’s one of the only good looking exclusives (in my opinion) for the 360 this year, if it happens this year. I can’t think of much more coming out than Alan Wake, Fable 2 and Halo Wars. Have I missed anything?
Gr1mzorz says:
Yeah that’s pretty much it for the 360, I am very disappointed with it, but its expected that there is going to be at least 2 more map packs for Halo 3 but at steep MS prices.

Matthew says:
PSN prices are better (usually), i agree with that. I mean come on, Tekken: DR at £6 (i think) was a great price. I have had a lot of fun with that game at parties. Remember?
Gr1mzorz says:
Tekken: Dark Resurrection is a fun little game great for parties, you know winner stays on sort of thing. I just don’t think Tekken or Virtua Fighter can compete with Soul Calibur games because it has weapons and those fun exclusive characters like Spawn and Link in Soul Calibur III and Darth Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur IV.

Matthew says:
Yeah Soul Calibur is a great game, I like it, even though i normally dont like fighting games. I much prefer FPS, RPG and Sports games.
Gr1mzorz says:
Yeah, i like FPS, but I am more into RTS and MMO game to be honest.

Matthew says:
RTS? Really, i did not know that!
Gr1mzorz says:
Yeah that’s why I am looking forward to Halo Wars. I’ve played a lot of RTS games such as Age of Empires, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, Warcraft 2 and 3, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World and Commandos.

Matthew says:
You learn something new everyday, eh! What are you going to play today? I’m going to promise myself that i will complete Half Life 2, but then just play Call of Duty all day, as normal.
Gr1mzorz says:
Well I have set myself the aim of getting red tiger for my dragunov in Call of Duty 4 and to get to Rank 37.

Matthew says:
How many headshots is that (to get Red Tiger)?
Gr1mzorz says:
It’s around 75 more

Matthew says:
Good luck. I think i will round it up here, thanks for the chat.
Gr1mzorz says:
Yeah you too

[Update: Gr1mmy achieved his goal of getting Red Tiger skin on his Sniper Rifle and leveled up!]

Gaming Conversation - Part 1
by Matthew Meadows
20.1.08
Matthew says:
What do you think about Call of Duty so far, on the PS3?
Gr1mzorz says:
Well since converting from Xbox 360 to the PS3 I found that changing controller was a bit of a struggle but overall the Graphics are slightly better over on the PS3.
Matthew says:
Yeah i agree, i saw some of those comparison videos on Game Trailers, there seems to be a little more detail in the textures and character models. A lot of games could learn a lesson from this game, as normally, multi-platform games are rubbish on the PS3.
Matthew says:
What game are you looking forward to in 08?
Gr1mzorz says:
Well there are 2 games I am really looking forward to this year, the first being Halo Wars to add to that already huge Halo universe, the second is probably Haze because I think it has a lot of potential for good online play and even a sequel.

Matthew says:
I know what you mean, at the moment Haze is probably the most promising looking game on the radar for me. But I cant stop looking at Burnout Paradise and thinking, you know what, the could bring back memories of the good old days of Need for Speed (Underground). I am pretty gutted about the loss of a "Crash mode" but still the map is huge and the demo had me playing for at least 15 hours.
Matthew says:
Are you going to buy Burnout: Paradise City?
Gr1mzorz says:
Yeah, from playing all of the of games in the Burnout series this is possibly the best even with crash mode being lost. It makes up with 8 player free roaming, tons of challenges and lots of potential for DLC.
Matthew says:
What would they do for DLC? Like a Need for Speed: ProStreet downloadable cars thing?
Gr1mzorz says:
Yup, since they design their own cars the limits are endless, also they could add a whole new part to the city.

Matthew says:
Not that you would need it, did you see the size of that thing on the demo ?
Gr1mzorz says:
Yeah its amazing. I think that Burnout is possibly one of the contenders for a GOTY but its tough to compare to other games that are being released in 08.

GOTY: 4-The Elder Scrolls:Oblivion
by Matthew Meadows
17.1.08

4) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

TES:O is a huge game. Never in a game have i seen such big environments with as much detail as this. This however, in places, hinders the game's chances at reaching the top three. You see, the AI would be better if it was not for such large places to walk around, but as is, the NPCs are somewhat annoying and get in the players way. What makes this game get into the top 5 is its superb graphics, great storylines and depth. Also, the first-person view of the action is a refreshing take on the genre. I can say to any RPG fans that this will not disappoint, but to FPS gamers and alike, maybe you should look for alternatives.

Like FPS Games?
by Gr1mmy
16.1.08
If you like FPS games and your a psycho then this maybe for you! A German company has come up with the drug to enhance your gaming skills. Its called FPS-Brain for obvious reasons. It has been approved by the German government so its not like your Class A drug, most of its ingredients are stuff like caffeine, sugar, vitamins and something called Sojalecithin which im not sure about. Its designed to enhance your brain speed, improve reactions and perception times. You can get these crazy pills for £15 for 60 pills, me personally i would never buy these things, i think its sick.

GOTY: 5-Warhawk
by Matthew Meadows
13.1.08

I know I have done one of these game of the year things before, but I don’t think I did it terribly well, so I’ll have another shot at it.

5) Warhawk

Warhawk set a benchmark in gaming, and while air-combat was samey and combat wasn’t brilliant, it was the first fully featured, downloadable game, to have online on the PS3. Graphics were heavily stylised and looked great. Although there was little variety in combat and match types, some modes stood out as being crackers, such as the ‘Zone’ matches which really brought the use of vehicles forward. However, in my opinion the game had some silly mistakes which cost it a higher place on the list, such as the need to press down L3 to talk on a headset (very tricky while flying a plane), the unreliability of the game (stats and ranks didn’t work for a while) and balancing issues (tanks are too good).

PS3 First Impressions
by Gr1mmy
11.1.08
I just plugged my PS3 in and while its getting a system update i will give you my first impressions. Firstly i wanted to complain about thinking my ps3 wasn't working because it wasn't making any kind of noise but it turns out that it actually sounds like that. So next i will tell you what i think of its looks, its beautiful to look at and you could almost get lost in a trance to how shiny it is. I got Eye of Judgement set up at my desk with all the cards and i can't wait to have a go. Also i got Medal of Honor Airborne free with it which im not sure i will get round to playing it since i have Need for Speed Pro Street and Call of Duty 4 coming tomorrow.

Better get back to my PS3. I will set up my PSN and post my name online sometime later.

Great Deal!
by Matthew Meadows
10.1.08
Hey guys,

I just found a great deal for Canis Canem Edit (Bully) on shop-to.net. It's only £9.99, with next day delivery included. The region of the game is PAL so this is a no-go for US gamers, but still I can highly reccomend this game to everyone with a PS2.

I See The Light!
by Gr1mmy
10.1.08

I finally decided to give the Xbox 360 a rest and so i will be getting my PS3 sometime in the next few days. This is partly because most of my friends own PS3's and i would like to game with them. Also, I am fearing my Xbox is going to break all the time after it broke a few months back. I am getting Call of Duty 4, Need for Speed Pro Street and Eye of Judgement (expect a review for EoJ and Pro Street).

Blu-ray gets Warner
by Matthew Meadows
4.1.08

Warner Bros. film production company has pledged to support the PS3's blu-ray system. The makers of...well it would probably be easier to tell you what they have NOT made, will dis-continue production of XBOX-360 backed HD-DVD movies.

This is a big factor in the console war as the promise of a built-in, superior HD player will help the PS3 sell as an alternative to an out-right blu-ray player.

Real Madrid Game
by Matthew Meadows
4.1.08

There is a game in development that has been ordered by Real Madrid football club. The game will be out on every console and will probably be focused on running/managing Real Madrid.
For people that don't know of the club, they are arguably the best team in Spain and once owned footballing super-star David Beckham.
This game seems to be a re-creation of the Club Football franchise, which let gamers take control of their favourite team. Just in case you didn't know, that franchise of games was absolutley awful.

Mini Preview: Far Cry 2
by Matthew Meadows
4.1.08
Far Cry 2 is set to make it to PS3, XBOX 360 and PC. The game, which is a FPS set in Africa, is being made by Ubisoft (makers of Splinter Cell and Assassins Creed).

This game is set to have a realistic weather system in which the weather changes around you. There will also be an opportunity to set things on fire and watch them burn down like they would in real life.
Finally, a system in which there are many ways in which to achieve an objective is on show, probably semi-inspired from Medal of Honour: Airbourne and Crysis.

Rumor: Monthly Subscription to PSN?
by Gr1mmy
4.1.08

Playstation Asia has said that they may add a subscription based service to the PSN network, in return they have said that you will be able to download as many PSP games as you want.

Gr1mmy

In fact, while this rumor does have some amount of truth behind it, the rumor actually stems from a questionairre asked to playstation owners in Asia (Hong Kong i think) asking wether they would pay an amount per year/month to get as many PS1/PSP titles as they liked. This however would NOT make PSN a subscribed service (like XBOX Live) as a user could still buy all products from the store and play games online for free. In my opinion the subscription would probably be good for sales, but I doubt it would make it to Europe, as we do not get many PS1/PSP games over here anyway.

(Update: It also seems like the subscription was also only planned for the PC version of the store)

Rumor: Crysis Coming to 360?
by Gr1mmy
3.1.08

The huge hit PC game Crysis where you have to adapt to survive in an artificial world with changing environments and very intelligent enemies. There is now speculaton that the game is going to be ported to the 360 sometime this year. The rumor started when an Austrian games website had a game on show with a release date of 20th of November. So hopefully this year the game will come over to the 360 aswell.

Gr1mmy

However I can put an end to this rumor by directing people who belive this rumor to Eurogamer's TV show. It is stated in said show that the PS3/360's development kits couldn't support the game's heavy physics engine. Also in the show was a room, in the developer's head quarters, shown to be dedicated to PS3 technology, which may, if anything, indicate a step towards PS3 exclusivity in the future (possibly aswell as PC).

About Gamer's Guide to Life
by Linford Butler
1.1.08
Gamer's Guide to Life.com is an independent videogames website based in the UK and focusing on providing quality games journalism optimised for UK-based readers, but relevant to others outside the UK also. Gamer's Guide to Life.com is currently edited by Lead Editor, Linford Butler. The site is owned and managed in the United Kingdom, currently by the Lead Editor.

Gamer's Guide to Life - or, as it became known, GGTL - was established in December 2007 by Matthew Meadows. Soon joined by fellow writers and friends Lewis O'Brien and James Grimshaw (affectionately known as Grimmy), Gamer's Guide to Life began to experiment with feature articles, editorial writing and the odd casual piece, all focusing on coverage of the games industry.

The site quickly grew after Linford Butler joined the team in June 2008. With a larger four-man team, coverage of the industry became more of a serious pursuit into the world of games journalism, in contrast to the prior casual nature of the site. Quickly establishing themselves as an upcoming name in games journalism, at least in the United Kingdom, Gamer's Guide to Life underwent a transformation, taking a direct and measured approach to serious games journalism and following the industry closely in order to provide unbiased and entertaining videogames coverage.

Gamer's Guide to Life underwent it's first major redesign and restructure in April 2009. This redesign saw the current version of the GGTL logo unveiled for the first time, based upon the structure of the old logo for familiarity but using Hand of Sean as its new official typeface. Hand of Sean was complimented by Liberation Serif, and the redesign saw this combination of official and serif font, and the first use of the official GGTL red as a main basis colour, used for the first time.

Around the same time, GGTL sadly said goodbye to two of the founding members of the site, Lewis and Grimmy, who both moved on to work on other things. However, the site was going strong and soon official positions were established, with Matthew Meadows as Lead Editor and Linford Butler taking the position of PlayStation 3 Editor. Jacques Hulme soon joined the ranks, taking Linford's old position as PlayStation 3 Editor. This saw Linford become Associate Editor, in a move which would form the first foundations of the Senior Editorial Team.

Gamer's Guide to Life underwent one major restaffing in autumn 2009, and another in January 2010. In December 2009, Matthew Meadows took the less-involved role of Managing Editor, and temporarily left the team due to commitments at university. He later left the site in May 2010. Linford Butler, working as Lead Editor, took charge of the management of the site, and under this role directed changes in team structure, staffing, policy and design of Gamer's Guide to Life.

Gamer's Guide to Life.com now has multiple writers coming from as far away as the United Kindom, the United States and the Dominican Republic. We focus solely on editorial content as of early 2010, and GGTL is the founding website of the Gamer's Guide to Life network of websites.

Reviews policy

Correct as of Tuesday, 6th July, 2010 - Our reviews policy details the rules and guidelines which all Gamer's Guide to Life.com writers abide to when writing reviews on games and hardware. These are the promises we make to you, the reader of the review, and to the publisher/developer of the game in question.

We will strive for completion
When reviewing a game, our writers will strive to complete a game to the highest level possible. Never in the reviewing process of a game will a GGTL writer knowingly write a review without being able to safely say that they have completed said game to a satisfactory point. This might be completing a single-player story or campaign mode on a single-player game; completing the co-op quest on a two-player co-op title; or playing at least a few hours on each game mode on an online-only title.

However, please do not expect members of our team to be completionists - 100% completion on any game is a hard task, let alone on the massive sprawling epics which are oft being released. As such, we will only review a game when we reach a point at which we feel we have seen everything there is to see and done everything there is to do, and the gameplay and storyline seems to advance no further.

We will never show unnecessary or excessive console bias
Each member of our team has a different console preference, and as such the reviewer is likely to play the game they are reviewing on their console of choice. We promise that console bias will never get in the way of a review score. We base games solely upon what they are when played, not which system they run on. However, we cannot promise to be entirely free of objective console bias - it is acceptable for a reviewer to increase or decrease a review score if the console it was reviewed on detracted from the game experience, as this shows a fault on the developer's part (and therefore a fault in the game) to perfect the release build of the game.

We will state the platform on which a game was reviewed
In every review, we promise to state the platform on which a game was reviewed, in order to ensure that readers understand entirely the reviewer's experience with the game. Multiple reviews may appear for the same title on different platforms, but this will only occur if the review for the game on one platform is significantly different to that on the other platform.

We will remain impartial and unbiased at all times
Whilst some sites out there will be bribed, pushed, convinced or threatened into changing review scores or removing negative reviews from a site by a publisher or developer, we promise never to be swayed or biased in any way, for any reason. Our reviews are written fairly and carefully, and as such we will not be pushed into a corner by a publisher miffed at a 6/10 score, or insulted by the tone of a review.

We will never remove or edit content without good reason, and any attempts by a developer or publisher to threaten, push or otherwise manipulate us into changing a score or review because they're not happy with what we said will be entirely ignored. Whilst we enjoy friendly and strong relationships with publishers, developers and PR around the world, they realise that staying true to our morals and policies comes first and foremost, certainly over getting a game early or making 'friends', and we will not be bullied, belittled or threatened into abandoning those morals. We will never sell our soul for some cheap love.

We will always give you a good idea of the pros and cons of a game
We promise that our reviews will give you a balanced and concise overview of both the positives and negatives of a title. Furthermore, our reviews will always be designed to give you a good idea whether to buy or not to buy a game.

Scoring policy

Correct as of 6th July 2010 - Reviews on Gamer's Guide to Life.com are consistently scored with our scoring policy in mind. We will never knowingly under- or over-score a game without reasonable and fair justification as written in the review. Our reviews are scored using a traditional ten-point system in two parts: a basic out-of-ten score to give an instant indicator of a game's prowess, and a text-based description of that score to give a little more detail into what the numerical score represents. The system is shown below:

10/10:
Technically and creatively perfect. Deep, developed gameplay, characters and story.
The best a game can be - a must buy for all gamers.

9/10:
Almost pefect with constant 'wow-moments' and very, very few flaws.
Must buy for all fans of the genre/series and most gamers in general.

8/10:
Generally positive, with many redeeming sections and some stand-out moments.
A solid buy for fans of the genre/series.

7/10:
Pleasing in short stints and, on the whole, passable.
Worth a rental if you are a fan of the genre/series.

6/10:
Some redeeming features and potential, but nothing is really developed or exciting.
Worth playing a demo if you are a fan of the genre/series.

5/10:
Distinctly average. Not good, but not really bad either. A little bland.
Worth playing a demo if you are a fan of the series/developer.

4/10:
Some glimmers of good in a sea of mediocrity.
Even the most dedicated and obsessed of fans would struggle to enjoy it.

3/10:
Some vaguely okay sections, but a waste of money nonetheless.
In general, you ought to steer clear.

2/10:
Very, very few redeeming features with little lifespan.
Only worth playing if you are desperate.

1/10:
Barely works and is a waste of time when played.
Hardly worth playing.

0/10:
An incompletable, irrevocably awful, unplayable mess.
Not worth playing at all.

Each review is scored by its respective reviewer, and the score given in one reviewer's review will be justified by the written review and the pros and cons of the game, but may not necessarily represent the views of other writers.

We will not tolerate discrimination
First and foremost, we will not tolerate any form of discrimination. Comments containing very little content and alot of sweariness will be deleted without exception. Multiple instances of these sort of comments will result in an email ban or even an IP block.

We encourage on-topic discussion and debates, but won't allow our discussions to become troll- and flame-bait

Posting such comments is known as trolling, and is defined as "posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion." Trolling isn't allowed here. 'Nuff said.

We prohibit spam, excessive linking or inappropriate material

Become a writer for Gamer's Guide to Life.com
by Linford Butler
1.1.08

Writing for Gamer's Guide to Life.com isn't easy. There's the constant demand for the highest level of humour. The requirement to be at least passable when it comes to gaming skill. The need for fingers to be able to type articles. It takes hard work and effort to get to the level of humourous-skill-finger-ability which all of our writers possess.

Perhaps that paragraph doesn't faithfully sum up what we do here. Whilst all of those requirements are certainly important, to write for Gamer's Guide to Life you need to be a very special, very talented écrivain indeed. Games journalism isn't as easy as it is often made out to be: alot of dedication, passion and hard work goes into the work we do here at GGTL, and each and every member of our team can vouch for the fact that it's no easy ride. It's a hugely enjoyable one though.

If you think that you can provide a valuable and constantly high-quality addition to the Gamer's Guide to Life team, chances are we'll welcome you with open arms. If you're still interested, read on.

Requirements

We're not hugely tight when it comes to what we require of you. Unlike the wide majority of publications, GGTL has a unique work ethic which, over time, has been honed to perfection and proven to work. We don't run deadlines and, on the whole, we don't set writing assignments. Our writers are free to write as and what they like, so long as they meet the few things we ask of them.

However, we do require some qualities in every writer on our team. You must be:
  • Skilled in the use of the English language
  • Technically and gramatically near-perfect
  • Passionate about videogames, technology and geek culture
  • Extensively knowledgeable about the industry
  • Prepared to dedicate time and effort to your writing
  • An active, enthusiastic team player
  • Able to produce quality content and work independently

If you don't meet every one of those requirements, then I'm afraid we won't be able to facilitate you on Gamer's Guide to Life.com. However, if you believe each of those matches who you are perfectly, then you're exactly the sort of person we're looking for.

As such, Gamer's Guide to Life.com has the right to distribute any content submitted by any writer as they so wish. Furthermore, Gamer's Guide to Life.com has the right to any and all commercial or financial profit made from use or distribution of the content and retains the rights to distribute, use and control any and all instances of content transferred to the Senior Editorial Team, in the manner in which it consideres appropriate, and regardless of where and how such content is republished.

All content posted on Gamer's Guide to Life.com remains the intellectual property of the individual writer, however the writer realises that they maintain no commercial, financial or legal ownership or right of the content once transferred via any medium to the Senior Editorial Team. Once published, writers may request for an article to be edited or removed, though this decision is made at the discretion of the Lead Editor and Gamer's Guide to Life.com is not obliged to fulfil any such request.

Restricted Use Policies (RUPs)

Gamer's Guide to Life.com writers are permitted to republish their articles only on a platform which they maintain complete control over, such as a personal blog or website. However, writers must seek permission before republishing articles from the Lead Editor and writers understand that Gamer's Guide to Life.com reserve the right to order the removal of that content from any other site, publication, platform or booklet apart from Gamer's Guide to Life.com, regardless of the matter in which such content has been reproduced (either in print or in electronic form). When exercising the previously described perogrative, Gamer's Guide to Life.com shall not be obliged to provide a reason for said order of removal. No individual permission granted by the site to republish content shall be deemed or considered a general permission, for the writer or content in question. In this sense, writers must seek individual permission for every article they wish to republish on a different outlet. If permission is granted, the republished article must clearly and non-discretely display a notice stating that the article in question was originally published on Gamer's Guide to Life.com and provide a link to the original article under the Gamer's Guide to Life.com domain name. Non-compliance with the previous requirement shall entitle Gamer's Guide to Life.com to revoke any permission which has been granted and demand the removal of the article or content in question from the site or publication in which it has been reproduced.

Gamer's Guide to Life.com entirely prohibits writers from republishing content if they have not garnered permission to republish said article. Furthermore, Gamer's Guide to Life.com prohibits writers from republishing content on any other commercial or non-commercial videogames website which is considered a competitor to Gamer's Guide to Life.com: websites on which content is republished must be personally and completely maintained by the writer in question. Exceptions to this rule will be explored on a case-by-case basis, but Gamer's Guide to Life.com reserves the right to refuse any request made by a writer to republish their content.

Writers on other sites in the Gamer's Guide to Life.com Network must also seek permission to republish their content in the same way, unless directly instructed otherwise in a similar copyright terms document on the respective Gamer's Guide to Life Network sister site.

Visitors to Gamer's Guide to Life.com, news aggregators, search engines and other such institutions may republish excerpts from articles on Gamer's Guide to Life.com without prior permission, on the understanding that Gamer's Guide to Life.com shall in all cases retain control of the content, as well as the right to edit or remove such content at any time for any reason; upon exercising such perogative, the site shall not be obliged to provide any reason or justification for the removal. Such excerpts are republished on the condition that a clear and indiscrete notice is shown stating that the original content was originally published on Gamer's Guide to Life.com, and must provide a link to the original article under the Gamer's Guide to Life.com domain name. Excerpts can only be used if they are short, non-excessive, relevant and provide an incentive to read the full article on the Gamer's Guide to Life.com website. However, republishing full articles or excessive amounts of articles, and/or the non-compliance by any party of the terms established herein above, will be considered a breach of copyright terms and shall entitle Gamer's Guide to Life.com to pursue any and all actions which it considers appropriate against the violator of such terms, in order to obtain the removal of any republished content as well as obtain compensation for any losses or damages suffered as a conseqence of such violation.
